Receiving Feedback
An important aspect of Mastering the Art of
Giving, Soliciting and Receiving
Feedback is the actual receiving of the feedback.
After we have learned the skill of soliciting feedback and we
can ask in such a way that we appear to be sincerely open to
whatever we will be hearing, all our efforts can be destroyed if we
do not receive feedback with an open mind.
If our behavior upon receiving the feedback does not validate
the integrity of the feedback solicitation, the result can be rather
negative.
When receiving feedback, some points to remember
are:
 | When asking for clarification, avoid a
challenging tone |
 | Refrain from becoming defensive |
 | Do not criticize the feedback |
 | Do not criticize the person giving you the
feedback |
 | Do not discount the examples you are given |
 | Do not belittle the behavior of others |
The following audio is an example of how not to
receive feedback. Listen to the audio and notice the comments made
by Susan that are inappropriate. How would you rephrase those
comments?
